  4. Modification of the Mires

  6. The mire can be modified to make it easier 
  7. to determine when the mires are properly 
  8. overlapped and give better repeatability.  
  9. The center of the one plus sign can be 
  10. blacked out and the extent of the other 
  11. one decreased on the mire object plate
  12. (on the front of the instrument).  This 
  13. allows the plus signs to be aligned using 
  14. vernier acuity which is more accurate than 
  15. just overlapping the plus signs.  The mires 
  16. are moved until a full plus sign is formed. 
  17. Likewise, the center of one minus sign can 
  18. be blacked out and the other one shortened.
